Studies have revealed that the average age of a gaming addict is 37. This will be surprising to many people as it is often assumed children and teenagers suffer from this problem. While there has been a significant increase in addiction amongst teenagers, people in their 30s are more likely to be obsessed with gaming.
Experts are blaming this on their early exposure to arcade games. In decades past it was common for children to head to the arcade and play games for hours on end. Unfortunately some of these children were unable to shake this habit. With the advance of technology, video games are now even more enticing to adult gamers.
There is a lot of stigma associated with gaming addictions. A lot of people think that those who suffer from this illness are simply lazy. The truth of the matter is that this is a behavioral disorder which should be treated seriously. Those who seek help will be able to be treated. Treatments for additions tend to consist of counseling and cognitive behavior therapy.
However it should be noted that playing video games a lot does not mean a person is suffering from addiction. It is when this hobby interferes with everyday life that it becomes a problem. Addicts often find that they do not perform well in school or work. They also suffer fatigue, experience withdrawal symptoms and lie to others about their computer game usage. People who feel that their gaming has started to affect their health, work and or social life should seek help from a medical professional.
